When it comes to man’s best friend, feeding them the right foods is crucial which is why we are sharing 10 really poisonous foods for dogs. While sharing our snacks might seem like a nice treat, not all human foods are safe for dogs. Certain foods can be extremely hazardous and even life-threatening. Here are ten foods you should never give your dog to ensure they stay happy and healthy. The number one choice relates to a personal story I will share.
10. Chocolate
Most dog owners know by now that chocolate is really bad for dogs. The main toxic component in chocolate is theobromine, which dogs cannot digest at all. The smallest amount can even cause serious problems, such as vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, seizures, and, in extreme cases, death. Dark chocolate and unsweetened baking chocolate are the absolute worst since they have higher levels of theobromine.
9. Grapes and Raisins
Grapes and their dried versions, raisins, are highly toxic to dogs. Even a small amount can lead to severe kidney issues, including acute kidney failure. Symptoms often include vomiting, lethargy, and loss of appetite, which can appear within hours of ingestion. Always keep grapes and raisins far out of reach from your pup.
8. Xylitol
Xylitol, which is an artificial sweetener found in gum, candy, baked goods, and even some peanut butter, is incredibly toxic to dogs. It can cause a rapid release of insulin which can lead to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), seizures, and even liver failure. Always check the ingredient list of any human food before sharing it with your dog to make sure it doesn’t have any xylitol.
7. Caffeine
Caffeine is another substance that can be deadly for dogs. Found in coffee, tea, soft drinks, and energy drinks, caffeine can cause symptoms such as hyperactivity, muscle tremors, seizures, and an irregular heart rate. Caffeine poisoning in dogs can be fatal, so always keep caffeinated products out of their reach.
6. Alcohol
Even a small amount of alcohol can deteriorate a dog’s health. Alcohol affects dogs in the same way it affects humans but at a much faster rate. Symptoms range from vomiting and diarrhea to coordination problems and even breathing issues. In severe cases, alcohol can lead to coma or death.
5. Macadamia Nuts
Macadamia nuts have toxins that can affect a dog’s muscles and nervous system, which can cause symptoms like vomiting, muscle tremors, weakness, and hyperthermia. Even a small amount can make your dog really sick. Make sure that all nuts are stored far and away of your dog’s reach.
4. Avocado
Avocado contains a toxin called persin, which is safe for humans but harmful to dogs. All parts of the avocado, including the fruit, pit, leaves, and bark, contain persin. Ingestion can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, and heart congestion. Additionally, the avocado pit can also become a choking hazard and can cause blocking in the intestines.
3. Dairy Products
While not toxic in the same way as some other foods, dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt can cause problems because many dogs are lactose intolerant. This intolerance can lead to digestive issues, including diarrhea, bloating, and gas. Stick to dog specific treats and foods to avoid upsetting your dog’s stomach.
2. Cooked Bones
It might seem natural to give your dog a bone, but cooked bones can be extremely dangerous. They can easily splinter and cause blockages or tears in a dog’s digestive system, leading to extreme pain and possibly requiring emergency surgery. This is more common than you may think.
1. Onions and Garlic
The onion family, including garlic and chives, contains compounds that can destroy a dog’s red blood cells, leading to anemia. Whether raw, cooked, powdered, or dehydrated, these foods can cause symptoms like weakness, vomiting, difficulty breathing, and death. If you think your dog has eaten onion or garlic, consult a veterinarian immediately.
My father was making a batch of beef jerky at his home, and he used onion powder as part of his seasoning. The dog pulled the bag of beef jerky from the counter and ate the entire bag. Unfortunately, the dog died shortly after, and it was too late. Please keep this in mind with your spices, since they will have the same effect.
