Dogs are drawn to children due to their playful nature. But sometimes, children tend to be a little too playful, that they are prone to accidents. Dogs, in their alert sense, would protect this child from harm, making them an excellent security for children. One stray dog from Batumi, Georgia, named Kupata, has a duty to serve the community, and it is by keeping their children safe while crossing the street.
Kupata would help students cross the street by barking at vehicles approaching, and once they stopped, he would accompany the children as they crossed the streets to make sure that they safely reached the other side. He has been doing his duty every day, which the community has taken notice of.
Because of this, the community has taken a liking to the stray dog. He even has a lot of names from different people in the community, such as Bim, Kursha, or Tetra. However, Kupata has been his name since a local butcher who always gives him treats named him after the Georgian translation for sausage. The butcher said that he decided to call him Kupata as he is chubby and well cared for by the community.
Kupata’s protective nature actually stemmed from his love for children. Every day, when he is done with his duties, he would spend time in a park near his home where he would play and watch the safety of the children who were at the playground.

Kupata’s Rise to Fame
The world instantly knew of Kupata after a video of him barking at vehicles and accompanying the children crossing the street went viral. People from all over the world gathered at Batumi, Georgia at, the area where Kupata performs his duties to see the dog in action. The Adjara Tourism Department has recognized Kupata’s contributions, so as a thank-you gift, they made Kupata a wooden dog house complete with an honorary star attached to his front porch.

As a local celebrity, his image is now painted at the side of a local building nearby where he performs his duties. Kupata also inspired the local program that now offers a small annual stipend to individuals who choose to adopt stray dogs around the Batumi area. This initiative will address the stray dog issue around the city by rehoming dogs to give them a second chance at life. It encourages the community to care for these dogs.

This has been synonymous with the experience of Kupata, who was once a stray dog with no person to look after him. Way before he rose to fame, he was once like the other stray dogs of Batumi. When Kupata was still a puppy, he suddenly showed up in the home of Nona Zakareishvili, a resident of Batumi, a little over four years ago. Zakareishvili laid out a rug for him and gave him food. But what grew him closer to the community was when he started to jump on vehicles at the street every time a child was crossing and since then, it has been his duty to look over children crossing the street.

From The Club
It warms my heart when stray dogs get the love and attention that they deserve, and I appreciate the people of Batumi, Georgia, for welcoming Kupata into their community. Oftentimes, stories about stray dogs usually fall under the sob category because, honestly, they don’t get the life of a dog living with their owners in the comfort of their homes. That is why I’m pushing for the adoption of stray dogs, as I believe that every dog deserves a second chance at life and a loving home.
