A Dog's Life on the Line Causes a Couple's Disagreement
FacebookTwitterRedditPinterest

A man and his girlfriend found themselves in disagreement about saving the life of a 4-year old pup.

Sometimes, even the people who are closest to us wouldn’t understand the bond that we have with our furry companions. When that happens, it’s difficult for us to make certain decisions, or worse, it triggers us to choose between our dog and another person. A man with a 4-year old pup had the same experience; he found himself choosing between the saving the life of his dog and following the request of her girlfriend.

Man with dog

On Reddit, a forum social network, a man shared his dilemma that involved his girlfriend and his dog Summer. The pup was recently diagnosed with skin cancer, but since it was caught early, a surgery could ensure complete recovery. The problem is the cost of the treatment, which is around $10,000. However, an even bigger problem surfaced when his girlfriend found about the situation and the man’s next move.

Spending on a Dog’s Surgery

To the man, it was a no-brainer. He’s willing to shell out $10,000 even if he doesn’t have a pet insurance. What he planned to do is get the money from his savings. He was all ready until his girlfriend found out about his decision.

According to the man, his girlfriend wasn’t happy when he shared his plan. She got upset because, first, she didn’t know about the savings, and second, because the money will be used for the surgery while she’s still unemployed. The couple is currently living together and things have been tough for the both of them. This is why the girlfriend seemingly downplayed the importance of the surgery and wanted the man to save the money instead.

Unsure if he’s making the right decision, the man went on to Reddit and sought outside perspectives. Redditors were in support of his decision and expressed frustration about the behavior of his girlfriend. Many of them also said that since they aren’t a married couple, the savings is his to use. Others urged the couple to work through the disagreement. This is after the man shared that he also sensed that his girlfriend will give an ultimatum. If ever they arrive to that situation, he would choose Summer, he added. In turn, the online community was relieved that Summer has an owner who prioritizes her health.

Supporting a Pet Post-Surgery

Dog after surgery

Besides the treatment cost, there are lots of other things that an owner should keep in mind, especially after their pet’s surgery. This is the time when they need all the support they could get until fully recovered. Here are some pointers to provide excellent post-surgical care:

  • Follow your vet’s instructions after surgery. It might be required to bring your pet back to the clinic for medications and checkups. Additionally, look out for instructions about dietary changes, if any.
  • To lessen the pain and discomfort of the dog, make sure he or she is confined in a comfy space that limits activity.
  • Provide your pet with a daily dose of love. This can alleviate the stress that might come in temporary loss of mobility. As your pup gets better, you can offer gentle massages or start walking routines to increase blood flow and mobility.

It’s sad to witness people having a hard time seeing the importance of a pet’s life. Summer is lucky to have an owner who does his best in taking care of her. That’s a story of pure loyalty, where money isn’t an issue if it’s about saving the life a furry friend. Anyway, I hope this is also one of those couple’s dilemmas that get sorted out in the end. Effective communication is often your best bet in disagreements.
