As flames loomed closer to their home, a man reassured his dog, saying that’s it’s going to be okay.

Wildfires can threaten human life, properties, and even a furry friend. During these times when fires create fear and uncertainty, our pets might need the very same emotional support they give to us humans. In a touching scene, a man tried to comfort his dog as wildfires surround their home. The words of solace represent the deep bond and love shared between them.

The Palisades Fire, known as the most destructive wildfire in Los Angeles to date, erupted on Tuesday morning, January, 7, 2025. Apocalyptic scenes have been spotted in many areas as the fires surged residences and business establishments, made worse by the hurricane-force gales. In this time of crisis, everyone tries to remain calm while prioritizing evacuation. However, one man decided to stay put in his home, along with his furry companion.

In a footage, the monstrous fires were seen blazing just yards away from the residence. The occupants were kind of trapped inside, but there remained an option to hide behind a breakfast bar, away from the windows that are vulnerable to intense heat. The anxious dog whose eyes widen with alarm was caught in the camera. The pet parent then tried to console the dog, and possibly himself, by saying words like “it’s gonna be okay.”

The wildfires in Los Angeles have already caused extensive damage, consuming more than 34,000 acres. As people rushed to escape, roads have become congested, and firefighters needed to use a bulldozer to remove the gridlock and proceed to containing the fires.

Taking Care of Pets During a Fire

When wildfires come for your house, you’ll only have time to grab some forms of identification if you’re not too prepared. But if you already have an emergency plan and kits ready, then evacuation could go more smoothly. This is why it’s important to have a plan that includes the following:

  • Identifying your dog’s hiding spots – Know the areas where your pets go to when scared, and check these places first during an evacuation. If there are many occupants in the home, it’s better to designate a “pet rescuer” during an emergency.
  • Keeping leashes near exit points – Place the leashes near the front or back doors, or other escape routes, for easy access.
  • Having a pet emergency kit ready – This kit should include the essentials like several days’ worth of water and pet food, collars with ID, medical records and medications, and comfort items like blankets or toys.

Consider Crate Training Your Pup

Crate training may be the least of your concerns when preparing for unforeseen events. But think about it, if your dog is used staying in a contained space, then this allows for the pup’s safe and quick evacuation during a crisis. Here are more benefits associated with crate training your dog:

  • Decreased stress levels – During a stressful emergency situation, a dog can find comfort in a familiar crate, helping them feel more secure.
  • Controlled movement – Having a crate ensures your dog won’t run away or get tangled in furniture when you have to evacuate immediately.
  • Easier supervision – A well-trained dog in a crate will give you less things to think about. It’s easy to supervise your pup if he or she is one place and this would also reduce the risk of them getting injured or lost.

From The Club

My heart goes out to all the victims of the Los Angeles wildfires. Being in a situation where you need to act fast and flee from safety can really trigger anxiety, even more so if you have furry companions depending on you. I heard some businesses have already offered temporary shelter to the victims, and I just wish more organizations would work together to help survivors, including pets, during this difficult time.
