“In sickness and in health,” is the most common line that we think about marriage vows, but this could also apply between an owner and a dog. When the worst comes to worst, we know that our dogs will stick by our side. However, there are times when we need to surrender them to loving families when we can no longer take good care of them. This is what happened between Minnie and her owner, who suffered from cancer.
So, an owner with cancer? You might think that this is one sob story. Well, yes, this one’s tearful, but the ending will touch you as it proves that an owner’s love for their dog is also everlasting.
Last October 29, the Humane Society of Greater Niagra shared in a post the story about one of their shelter dogs that was readopted by her previous owner, who was diagnosed with cancer back in 2022. Luckily, the owner survived, which made him claim his dog, whom he separated from due to his illness.

For years, Minnie and her owner were completely inseparable, and when he learned the news about his rare form of cancer, Minnie had a stronger hold on him even more. Still, she continued to stay by his owner’s side, acting as his aide to make everything bearable for him. But eventually, his owner needed to put him up for adoption as he could no longer take good care of her.
As Minnie’s owner is getting treated for his cancer, she faces her own struggles. Like any other dog in the shelter, Minnie was just sitting at his kennel, waiting for a family to adopt her. According to the shelter, this was the first time that Minnie had separated from her owner since the day she was born.
What Minnie doesn’t know is that his owner kept thinking of her even when he was trying to battle his illness with treatment. Her owner kept Minnie’s dog tags in his wallet, and he visited the shelter to look at Minnie from afar.

Reunited
Sadly, years have passed in the shelter yet, Minnie wasn’t adopted by anyone. No one came to feel the void that his owner left for. Still, Minnie was patient, and because of this, she was met with a piece of unexpected news in August.
The shelter said that Minnie’s owner got the news that he prayed for — he was finally in remission. The first thing that the owner has thought of is Minnie. He visited the website, hoping to reclaim Minnie. That’s when he saw Minnie’s face staring at him. He just knew that he had to call on dibs to claim Minnie back in his life.
He rushed back to the shelter, fixed Minnie’s papers, and finally reunited with her. Every single moment of their reunion was captured on camera by the shelter, and they posted it on their Facebook page for everyone to see.
As soon as Minnie was out of her kennel, her owner called her and that was when Minnie came rushing to him. She wagged her tail and moved her body around her owner as she hugged him in doggy language. In the video, Minnie can be heard crying with joy. She never expected this to happen again.

The shelter was happy to have been part of the story of Minnie and his owner. While she was in their care, they did everything to uplift Minnie and cared for her while they waited for someone to see her charm and adopt her.
The Humane Society of Greater Niagra shared that Minnie waited for a total of 750 days. There was even one failed adoption. But Minnie was really meant to be with her Dad. Although she needed to wait for years and be put under adoption, nothing could beat fate.

From The Club
This made me cry because I recently lost my childhood dog of 14 years, named Calix, last weekend. I relate to Minnie’s dad making a difficult decision because we were also put into the same situation where we needed to decide to put Calix to sleep due to his condition. Eventually, we made the difficult decision to put him to sleep to stop making him suffer. This would be a long way to heal my heart, but at least the story of Minnie and her owner made me smile.
