Dog pawrents, where did your fur babies’ names come from? We know that selecting names for our dogs is one of the most important parts of their early years with us, so we take all the time needed to search, or it could be something that’s really distinct to them. Recently, the American Kennel Club (AKC) has released the most popular dog names for both males and females. You might want to check them out, just in case your dog’s name is listed there.
A dog’s name is one of the most unique things about them as it could be something that’s distinct to their look or hobbies. Some of you might name your dog Apple if you have an apple head chihuahua or Rooster just because he likes to chase after chickens outside. There are hundreds to thousands of names available, and it’s up to you, dog owners, to select the best possible name for your dogs.

Gina DiNardo, Executive Secretary of AKC, said that since dogs become an important part of our lives, naming them is a fun process. She added that we put a great deal of thought into naming our dogs, and we put in hours just to come up with a name that suits them (or not). Some even spend days as they want to know the dog more, and maybe they could come up with a name that’s made especially for them.
With this, the AKC has put up the top 10 most popular dog names of 2024 for both male and female dogs. Here, have a look at the list:

How To Pick Your Dog’s Name

Let’s say you just had a new dog, and you don’t know what to name them yet. You might want to take your time choosing the perfect name. Now that you’ve seen the most common names for dogs, you wouldn’t want them to be the sixth Daisy in the neighborhood or the other Lilo at the pet grooming shop.
Of course, we would want it to be as unique as possible, so we’ve listed down some tips for selecting the perfect name for your dog, as suggested by Jill Beitel, owner of Courteous Canines.
- Keep it short – If you want your dog to easily remember their own name, you should keep it short and easy to say. Dogs will typically respond to their owners when called by name, so don’t confuse them further. But in cases wherein you’ve chosen a formal name for them that’s quite long, make sure to give them a short but sweet nickname (ex. Wellington – Welly)
- Start with hard consonants and vowel endings – If your aim is for your dog to respond easily, especially with training, pick names with a good uplift at the end.
- Don’t Use Confusing Sounds – Try to stay away from names that sound like commands to dogs. An example of this would be “Kit,” which sounds like the command “sit.”
- Avoid offensive names and ask permission from the person if using their names – You wouldn’t want to name your dog something embarrassing and call them in public, right? Make sure that your chosen name for your dog is free from being offensive. Also, when you decide to name it after a loved one, you can always ask for their permission.

Writing this made me remember how we chose our dogs’ names because we would really take our time deciding what to call them and their nicknames. What’s great about it is the personal stories that only me and my family know. We name them based on the food that they look like or the meme we’ve associated them with. I can say that it’s really a fun experience naming dogs.
