Little boys made a huge impact on their community by rescuing a sweet abandoned dog, and two more after that.
A villain can bring out the hero in us. That’s what happened to four boys in Detroit after seeing a heartbreaking sight that involved a helpless dog. These four boys took the urgent matter into their hands and did everything they could to give the pup a second chance at life. This story also reminds us that animal rescue is something that we can actively participate in, regardless of our age or size.

Within Detroit’s 7-mile area, Kenneth, Kenny, Kevin, Dancy, and Andrew were helping a woman move when they saw a pup in need of help. The dog was in a dire situation, having been left by her owners and tied up with bungee cords. The pup was helpless behind an abandoned house, and it was obvious she was underweight and too weak to withstand the cold weather that day.
The four boys realized they had to do something quickly. They grabbed a winter coat to keep the dog warm and removed the cords restraining her. After that, the boys decided to take her home so she can get food and water to replenish her energy. They named her Sparkle when they took her in for awhile, providing her all the care and support she needed.
What Happened After Sparkle’s Rescue
After the rescue, the young boys bumped into some of the members of Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue. This happened while the boys were walking Sparkle around the neighborhood. They shared everything that has happened with the rescue team who was worried Sparkle might have mange. To be sure, the organization took Sparkle in for check up. They also shared her story on Facebook, calling the four little boys her “heroes.”

Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue Founder Theresa Sumpter could see the boys’ love for Sparkle. They wanted to make sure that the pup will have a new loving home, she added. Thankfully, after the examination, it was confirmed that Sparkle was free of mange. This speeded up the process for her to get adopted. Pet Tales Rescue, a partner of Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue, took care of the entire process and found Sparkle a foster mom who was excited to care for her.
As for the four boys, their kindness and bravery have been widely recognized. They rescued two more dogs in their neighborhood, and with the help of Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue, provided them with the necessary veterinary care. The boys are really out there doing purposeful work and making a difference to the lives of abandoned dogs.

Adopting a Rescue Dog

Just like the four young boys in our story, you can be a hero by adopting a shelter dog who needs a second chance. By doing so, you don’t just impact the life of your adopted dog. You also make space for other animals, giving them the opportunity to find their own homes. However, it’s worth noting that adopting a rescue dog might initially require extra care and effort. This is because of their traumatic past or a different living situation they had been accustomed to.
It might take some time for a former stray dog to get habituated in a new environment or get used to doing certain activities. You need to pack a lot of patience, compassion, and trust that your pup will be able to adjust. Never force them to do something and start by giving your love from afar. Slow introductions could get you fast to forming bonds with your new pup.

It’s amazing to see young boys doing something that could change a dog’s life for the better. Even though it happened years ago, it remains a classic tale of compassion. Age really doesn’t matter when doing something kind and showing love to our canine friends. You can tell that it’s really in the hearts of those boys to help when they rescued two more dogs after taking care of Sparkle. Hoping to see more acts of kindness toward animals because they, too, are sentient beings like us.
