It is a known fact that a dog’s sense of smell is 10,000 to 100,000 times greater than a human’s. Yes, it means they can smell even the things that are hidden under the noses of us humans. 🤣 This is the same reason why they can sense danger that is about to happen. They have this natural instinct to protect themselves and their masters from harm lurking around. This is what happened to a 10-month-old Great Pyrenees puppy who prevented an accident waiting to happen.
Caitlyn Radel-Paaby knew that their puppy, Willow, always greeted anyone who entered their home. But one day, as she entered the house, she didn’t see Willow waiting for her at the door. Paaby was concerned as this was an unusual behavior exhibited by Willow. She checked for her boyfriend and infant son in the room, but Willow wasn’t with them.

As soon as Paaby found Willow, she wouldn’t come out under the desk as she kept nervously barking over something. Paaby went closer to check on what the puppy was nervous about, and she observed that Willow kept staring and barking at the outlet.
Paaby couldn’t understand what Willow was trying to say, so eventually, she touched the outlet to see if there was anything weird. She felt that the outlet was too warm, and upon closer inspection, she discovered a small fire that had developed in the electrical outlet, and Willow sniffed it out before it had even started.
Immediately, Paaby called the fire department and explained what was going on. As the firefighters arrived, they inspected the outlet, and they told the family that they were lucky enough to point out the fire before the house could burst into flames overnight. Luckily, Willow spotted the fire before it got worse.
Paaby said that they were shocked as Willow had never done something like this before. She added that Willow always keeps her human brother safe and clings to her like crazy. She would always alert Paaby if something felt off, but she didn’t expect that the puppy would go as far as to sense an accident while waiting to happen.

Thanks to Willow, no one in the family was harmed, and none of their belongings were destroyed. While dogs can possibly be trained to detect fire, Willow has 0 training, which makes her a one-smart puppy. She didn’t need training to sense that something was off. The incident happened days before Thanksgiving, and it is one thing that the family will always be grateful for.

A Dog’s Strong Sense

A dog’s sense is amazing, and I guess that’s what makes them smarter than other animals. They were given this gift that would be beneficial for them and their masters. This can also go as far as saving someone’s life, so it’s good to have them developed at an early age. Let’s check out other things that dogs can sense:
- Emotional State – One known talent of dogs is to be able to detect what their humans are currently feeling. It’s because they detect changes in your mood, body language, and the pheromones that your body releases. Responding to it may be in the form of them keeping you company by letting you know about their presence.
- Health Issues – Dogs have the ability to detect certain health issues that you might be encountering. They do so by sensing the changes from the smell of our breath to the changes in our skin.
- Pregnancy – Before you have it tested, some dogs can already say when their owners are pregnant. A human’s changes in pheromones, hormones, and behavioral changes. These are the things that your dog is observant about.
- Approaching Natural Disasters – Just like other animals, dogs can sense natural disasters way before we detect them. They have this thing called acute hearing that allows them to hear distant sounds of thunder and or changes in the atmosphere. This sense actually gets them ready just in case the disaster strikes.

From The Club
Even after having many dogs for years, their sense of feeling, hearing, and smelling still amazes me. As a dog owner myself, I’ve seen how my dogs react to different things, which completely makes sense of how protective they are to protect themselves and their family from danger. It goes to show how our dogs will always go the extra mile for us. If you have a dog at home, let them feel that you’re grateful for them by giving them a treat or doing their favorite things with them.
