A little girl with a rare disease that left her unable to walk finally took her initial steps, thanks to her service dog.

When Bella met George, a heartwarming story of transformative bond unfolded. George, a Great Dane service dog, provided not just physical assistance but also emotional support and a sense of autonomy to Bella, a child with Morquio syndrome. Bella’s family recognized the huge impact George had on Bella when the latter took her first steps with the service dog.

How George made Bella’s life better is a story worth sharing with a broader audience. This is why Bella and her mother publicly recognized George by nominating him for the “Dog Best Day” series of BarkPost. The series puts a spotlight on extraordinary dogs and the roles they play in the lives of their owners.

A special day was then planned out for George. The service dog was appreciated through delightful surprises and fun activities in a hotel, a renowned restaurant, a ski resort, and a dog-friendly bakery. The entire day made George feel as loved as he made Bella feel each day. Years later, the two continued to share their adventures on their Facebook page. They remain as living proof that human-canine relationships can have an extraordinary, almost magical impact on our lives.

George’s Best Day

The entire day of pampering for George was a testament of Bella and her family’s gratefulness. It started with a luxurious stay at Copley Plaza Hotel, where the staff treated the service dog like a true royalty. George also went to the Wahlburger, a restaurant where he indulged in a delicious meal of hamburgers. It was a welcome break from his diet and was one of the highlights of his special day. As if that wasn’t enough, George also got to enjoy an assortment of treats at the Polka Dog Bakery. He eagerly munched on his favorite treat: Dino-bone.

The celebration continued as George went to a sledding session. A ski resort was generous enough to close off an area so the service dog can exclusively enjoy his favorite activity. He sled down the snowy slopes with pure joy and it was exactly what Bella and her family wanted to see and make him feel.

To cap the day off, George went back to the hotel and found himself in a room filled with toys, balloons, and a brand-new dog bed. Through these thoughtful gifts, Bella and her family expressed deep appreciation for George’s dedication and companionship.

Bella was 11 years old when she met George, a 2-year old Great Dane trained at Service Dog Project in Massachusetts. The Service Dog Project is known for donating Great Danes to those with severe mobility and balance issues. As for Bella’s case, she leans on George for support as if the dog was her crutch.

Through it all, George was patient. Wherever Bella went, he was also there. Even in school, George walked Bella from one class to another. He was also a source of comfort during the child’s medical appointments and when it’s time for her to sleep. The trust that Bella had on her furry companion gave her the confidence to enjoy the outdoors. She finally run and frolic across the yard, with the protective Great Dane by her side. Bella became so much happier and independent when she no longer needed a wheelchair or her crutches to move around.

George was also honored by the American Kennel Club for the positive impact he made on Bella’s life, where he received an award for Canine Excellence. In June 2024, George passed away after being sick on and off in November 2023. On his last day, he was surrounded by his family on his favorite spot in the yard. They still call him the “goodest boy ever” and will forever be grateful for the memories and adventures he shared with Bella.

From The Club

It’s so touching how George went above and beyond in protecting Bella and helping her enjoy life despite having a rare disease. I can see that George didn’t only do his “duty.” He was always there because he found a friend in Bella and Bella felt the same way. George is a perfect example that dogs can change our lives. Their calming presence and emotional support keep us standing, inspiring us to face life as is and make the most out of it.
