Sometimes, the best thing you could do for your loved one is to let them go. This is what a homeless man did to ensure his dog would live a life of peace again.
Being financially challenged can be a nightmare. Being homeless? It’s a whole different thing, especially if you’re also a pet parent. You don’t just have yourself to think about, there’s also the safety and well-being of your pup. A man who became homeless did what every loving pet parent would if their life took an unexpected turn. What he did was painful but it can be called a lifelong gift. A symbol of their unbreakable bond.

When times got tough for a man with a dog called Hero, they soon found themselves living on the streets. Together, they braved the difficulties of going on for days without food and a safe place to stay. Despite the change, the man still showed love and care for Hero in the best way he could. Later on, he realized that Hero deserves better. He wanted a brighter future for him. That’s why he made the painful decision of surrendering Hero to a California shelter, wherein the pup’s life was changed forever.
The Start of a New Life
The rescue group in the shelter helped Hero to find a new loving home and family. They organize transport of pets from shelters to British Columbia, and Hero was selected to join the next trip. Sarah and his husband from British Columbia heard about Hero and got to meet him when he arrived. Both of them knew that the dog belonged in their home, and so they went on with the adoption.

As soon as Hero arrived at his new home, he became an instant snuggle buddy. The couple was also delighted with his gentleness and intuitiveness. He sense the emotions of his new family and helps them ease their fears with a “comfort” mat. This is Hero’s safe space at his new home. He sits on the bath mat when he’s feeling anxious. One time, he dragged it to his mom when she seemed stressed.
The couple noticed that Hero was a bit lazy, though. Or so it appears. He usually stays at home and snuggle with them and is easily overwhelmed by the outdoors. They think this behavior has something to do with him being homeless before the rescue.

Notes on Dealing with an Anxious Dog
Hero had a great bond with his former owner, so it’s possible that a part of him is still dealing with separation anxiety. This could also be one reason why he almost always wants to snuggle with his new parents. To minimize separation anxiety, it would help to introduce calm departures and returns, creating a safe space for the pup, and providing enough mental and physical stimulation.

A rescue dog might become upset when you leave the house so get him used to it by picking up your keys at random times (without really leaving). Additionally, make your pup’s safe space as comfortable as possible. Fill it with a bed, toys, and familiar scents. Before leaving him alone, spend some time playing or going on a training session to provide mental stimulation. This should serve as an outlet for excess energy and help reduce reactivity.

From The Club
Nothing feels better than being able to give all the love and care that your pup needs, even if it means being separated with them forever. Hero’s former owner is a selfless man, demonstrating the great need to secure a safe home for our pets. The story was both sad and heartwarming. Hero, somehow, took with him his experiences living outdoors, which had noticeable effects on his current behavior. Thankfully, he’s now in a safe place with his new parents who will shower him with love and understanding.
